Astrium completes major milestone on the James Webb Space Telescope

Ottobrunn - Astrium has successfully completed the Engineering Test Unit (ETU) for the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec). NIRSpec will be integrated in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and will peer into the origins of our Universe. NIRSpec is a 100 million euros spectrometer, which is being developed by Astrium in Germany, capable of detecting the faintest radiation from the furthest galaxies. The completion of the ETU marks an important milestone for the JWST, and it will shortly be shipped to the United States where it will undergo testing by NASA.

Astrium to provide the ISS with new scientific capabilities

Cape Canaveral - The US space shuttle Discovery is set to carry three new research facilities to the International Space Station (ISS) allowing more on board science to take place. The research facilities were built under the industrial leadership of Europe’s largest space company Astrium. The new facilities are the Materials Science Laboratory (MSL), Declic, which will research fluid physics and the second unit of the space freezer Melfi. With the help of this new equipment, scientists will be able to investigate processes which may lead to the development of new alloys, semiconductors and methods.

Astrium conducts European Space Agency (ESA) study on a new transport system for return to Earth: the Advanced Re-entry Vehicle (ARV)

Bremen - Astrium, Europe’s leading space company, is conducting a study for a future European Transport System, ARV (Advanced Re-entry Vehicle), on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA). Accordingly, Astrium is exploring the requirements for a system transporting cargo to the International Space Station (ISS) and back to Earth as well as the necessary steps to realise such a program. The ARV programme study by ESA amounts to €21 million.

Herschel - The largest space observatory on its way

Kourou - A picture-perfect launch from the Kourou Space Centre in French Guyana: Today, at 3:12 p.m. CEST, the scientific satellites Herschel and Planck were launched aboard an Ariane 5 rocket. Herschel, the largest mirror telescope ever put into space, will detect the invisible infrared light of distant galaxies and observe the birth of stars and planets. The Planck satellite will peer into the outer reaches of space and examines the cosmic background radiation. Both missions are milestones of modern astronomy and Europe's major contribution to the Year of Astronomy 2009. The space company Astrium is actively involved in both of these European Space Agency (ESA) projects.

GOCE "surfs" the Earth’s gravitational field

Plesetsk/Friedrichshafen - The European research satellite GOCE is scheduled for lift-off on March 16, 2009. It will be launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Northern Russia (approx. 800 km north of Moscow) on board a Rockot vehicle provided by Eurockot Launch Services under a contract with the European Space Agency. The Gravity-Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) will ‘surf’ the Earth’s gravitational field and investigate the interior of the planet from an altitude of about 250 kilometres.
