EADS wins million-dollar contract from the Brazil police for implementation of the environmental programme

Friedrichshafen/Brasilia, 27  November  2000

The largest environmental programme of South America - protection of the Amazon regions - is going to be implemented. Therefore, Brazil intends to modernise its police authorities with the PROAMATEC project (increase of the presence of the federal police). On behalf of the Brazilian government, the state-owned French company Sofremi has awarded the contract (total volume: US-$ 425 million) to the two partner companies EADS Deutschland GmbH and Thomson-CSF/Paris. Dornier GmbH, a corporate unit of EADS, will be responsible for the implementation of the German programme share. This was reported by Dornier GmbH on Monday in Friedrichshafen.

Dr. Stefan Zoller, CEO of Dornier GmbH and Head of the EADS Business Unit Defence Electronics and Telecommunications: "We are glad that the government-level talks and negotiations between Brazil, France and Germany are stimulating the Amazon project. We are highly pleased about this success because it gives us the unique opportunity to use our technical know-how and our system capability in reconnaissance and information technology in a large area".

The main objectives of PROAMATEC are: improvement of the surveillance and information systems of the police units, introduction of new control systems for identification and of advanced methods against the organised crime, procurement of better police transport means (air, water, land), as well as an intensified training and the increase in federal police staff. Because of the size of the country, the most powerful means cannot be spread all over Brazil but must be concentrated and used when required. The main areas of the project are: telecommunication systems, recognition and identification systems, scientific examination labs, police transport means, e.g. aircraft, helicopters, high-speed boats, information technology, reconnaissance and command systems, logistical support and training of the federal police department.

PROAMATEC will be introduced in three phases: initial delivery, complementary delivery and modernisation of the instruction and teaching methods. The police units could immediately benefit from the new operation control systems as they can be easily introduced into the existing infrastructure.

Brazil will modernise its federal police department for PROAMATEC, the new environmental protection programme.

The Environmental Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 attracted the world's attention to the plight of the world's largest rainforest area. With a surface area of 8.5 million square kilometres, a population of 159 million inhabitants, a coastal line of 7,500 km and river courses with a length of 50,000 kilometres, Brazil developed a series of protection programmes for the Amazon regions which can only be observed with the participation of the federal police department. The aim of the Brazilian government is to achieve a sustained social and economic development and at the same time preserving a balanced environment. All the existing programmes (Pró-Amazònia for Amazon regions, Promotec for all the other parts of the country) have been concentrated in PROAMATEC in order to stop the illegal activities in the Amazon region.

EADS was formed from the merger of DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG, the French Aerospatiale Matra and the Spanish Construcciones Aeronáuticas and is one of the world's three leading aerospace companies.
