EADS Defence & Security to extend TETRA M-Funk network of Stadtwerke München GmbH

  • One of the largest public TETRA networks in Germany
  • MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG is the first major customer in this network
  • Presentation at the TETRA World Congress in Munich

27 May 2009

EADS Defence & Security is to extend the TETRA radio network of Stadtwerke München (SWM): 1,100 subscribers currently use the network, which is being expanded from 15 to a total of 31 TB3 base stations.

SWM, the network operator, also offers ‘M-Funk’ to external customers. Supported by EADS Defence & Security, SWM acquired MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG as its first major customer for M-Funk. The SWM radio network is used primarily by MAN’s works fire brigade and its plant protection and maintenance units.

The marketing of these professional services and solutions to third parties creates special challenges for the system infrastructure. EADS TETRA networks support independent and secure use by different organisations through the use of Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology. They can be flexibly extended without having any impact on the functionality. Growing subscriber numbers and network extensions thus pose no problems and are possible at all times. Numerous interfaces integrate existing infrastructures and customer-specific applications. Up-to-date data are available for the analysis of usage statistics and the billing of services.

SWM is in an excellent position to market the TETRA M-Funk network. On the basis of Java applications, it programmes customer-specific solutions such as fault notification systems, power plant applications, retrieval of telephone book functions and GPS-based positioning functions for the EADS TETRA terminals.

At the TETRA World Congress 2009 in Munich, SWM will present its TETRA M-Funk network and interesting applications at the EADS Defence & Security exhibition stand. For this purpose, an SWM TETRA base station with two carriers will be installed at the exhibition stand and integrated with the existing infrastructure. Interested customers can test and experience the powerful performance and range of functions of M-Funk in live operation. Using a model power plant with graphical control system coupling, up-to-date process data will be securely transmitted via M-Funk. The Java applications that have already been implemented by SWM, such as route planning, a fault notification system and database searches, can also be viewed at the stand.
EADS Defence & Security won the contract to set up a TETRA digital radio network for Stadtwerke München in July 2006. SWM is the largest communal energy supplier in Germany. The digital trunked radio system fulfils the advanced requirements of the energy supply company in terms of the security, performance and cost-effectiveness of internal communication. Users include on-call services and the personnel responsible for service, maintenance and emergency assignments at Stadtwerke München. The TETRA network will provide them with support for information exchange, fault management and personal security as well as improving operational processes in general as a result of optimised site communication.
