EADS CASA inaugurates the new “Bahía de Cádiz” centre in Puerto de Santa María

Cádiz, 02 July 2003

The new facilities of EADS CASA “Bahía de Cádiz” in Puerto de Santa María were inaugurated today. This event was presided over by Manuel Chaves, president of the Andalusian Board, accompanied by the government representative, Juan Ignacio Zoido, the mayor of Puerto de Santa María, Hernán Díaz Cortés and other officials. On EADS CASA’s part, the president Francisco Fernández Sáinz was present, together with the director of the facilities, Jesús García Argüelles and other executives from the company.

The “Bahía de Cádiz” centre replaces the one located in Puntales, built in 1927 to house the construction of the hydroplane Dornier Do J Wal. It has been a reference in the Spanish aeronautic industry. The new centre covers a total surface of 78,840 square metres, of which 20.056 are covered, and is located on the road from Puerto de Santa María to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Km 5.5.

From this modern production centre, EADS CASA wants to become Europe’s leader in costs, quality and flexibility in the production processes of Sheet Metal Work, Superplastic Forming and Fibre Placement.

The Sheet Metal Work process consists in the production of parts, of very different configurations and sizes up to 3.6 metres long, from metal sheets made of aluminium, titanium and steel alloys.

This work is carried out by conforming parts in fluid cell presses at very high pressure and in bending machines, finishing with the surface anti-corrosion treatment and painting.

The Superplastic Forming is a process that consists in taking advantage of the superplastic characteristics of certain titanium alloys that can elongate greatly at high temperatures and pressure without breaking and together, with Diffusion Welding, permit the manufacturing of complex parts.

Fibre Placement is a technology that automates the positioning of carbon fibre or other materials in wicks by means of a machine that can simultaneously place up to 32 wicks.

The three technologies are used in programmes of the different Airbus families, Eurofighter, Military Transport Aircraft and in collaboration with other manufacturers.
