EADS TELECOM role in ensuring the safety of all participants in APEC Mexico 2002 with TETRAPOL technology

Paris, 24  October  2002

EADS TELECOM provided the secure radio communication infrastructure based on the TETRAPOL technology to the main security bodies and to the organizing committee in all APEC (Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation) Mexico 2002 events to help out in ensuring the safety of all participants.

The APEC Mexico 2002 Summits inaugurated by Mexico President Vincente Fox, gathers heads of governments and key official institutions. During such a high level summit, a relevant aspect is the communication equipment that will provide support to several security groups who send and share sensitive information in a secure mode in order to keep the integrity of all the participants during the events.

Security has always been a major issue in the APEC region, but in the wake of September 11, and the war on terrorism, it has come even more to the fore.

In these Summits, as in all events involving high ranking personalities, it’s an added value to count with a state-of-the-art tool that guarantees secured digital radio communications allowing to safely transmit data, voice or image with absolute confidentiality avoiding interceptions of the information by an unexpected intruder; that is, messages are end to end encrypted and this guarantees that they cannot be broken-in.

The TETRAPOL technology is the only radio communication solution deployed at great scale that has proven to be reliable and operatively efficient at events of paramount importance that require HIGH SECURITY.

As part of the government programme to combat insecurity, Mexico has already equipped its security forces with an impregnable voice/data radio communications system, incorporating on the one hand a national federal network and, on the other, 30 regional networks which are fully interoperable among themselves and with the federal network. All these networks are based on TETRAPOL technology.

In Europe, national multi-user TETRAPOL networks are being introduced in Spain, France, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Switzerland bringing together police forces, medical emergency services, fire services, civil security and other national organisations.

Some of the success stories in the international level that support this technology are: the G7 Summit in 1996, the Soccer World Cup in 1998, the visit of His Holiness John Paul II to Rumania in May 1999 and the Summit of the International Monetary Fund in the Czech republic. In Mexico, The Monterrey Summit on Financing for Development, which was held in March this year, the event of the Puebla – Panama Plan in the city of Merida, as well as the recently visit of his Holiness John Paul II to Mexico.

At present, 64 networks are deployed or under construction in 30 countries worldwide, using a technology based on the TETRAPOL standard, approved by the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) and the Police Cooperation Group (formerly the Schengen Group). Many of these networks cover entire nations: RUBIS (Gendarmerie Nationale) and ACROPOL (Police Nationale) in France, SIRDEE in Spain, PEGAS in the Czech Republic, SITNO in Slovakia, PHOENIX in Romania and IRIS in Mexico.

Presently, total TETRAPOL network coverage is over 1.4 million square kilometers – an area three times larger than France – serving some 420,000 users. Once the deployment operations now underway are complete, TETRAPOL will serve a million users with coverage of 4 million square kilometers. Investment in the networks so far amounts to € 3 billion.
