ATR promotes the environmental qualities of its aircraft

Farnborough, 22 July 2002

ATR (Avions de Transport Régional) decided to launch a campaign to emphasise the advantages of its turboprop aircraft in terms of environment. In particular, ATR will provide its customers with a sticker to be shown on the fuselage nearby the cabin door. The 30 cm in diameter sticker represents an aircraft drawing with the « Environment Friendly» mention written on it.

« ATR applies this green policy since the very beginning of its programme and time has come to actively promote this message, highlights Jean-Michel Léonard, ATR CEO. The respect of the environment is and will be the key factor of the future development of any industrial project in our societies and this is particularly true for all means of transportation.»

The low fuel consumption ATR aircraft meet both external noise and gazeous emission level regulatory requirements with ample margins.

ATR aircraft are recognized as the most fuel efficient aircraft in their category thanks to high-tech engines and propeller efficiency.

The ATR family has been designed to obtain the minimum noise and environmental impact. The high technology propeller system installed on –500 series dramatically reduces noise emissions. As shown in a recent report from the European Regional Airlines Association (ERA), all ATR models will even comply with the future most stringent ICAO-stage IV noise recommandations, effective 1st January 2006.

Advanced turboprop operate more efficiently than regional jet aircraft on short-haul routes. They emit about 20% less carbon dioxide (CO2) per passenger-km than newer regional jets and up to three times less CO2 than older ones. As far as the nitrous oxides are concerned, the ATR is 3 times less pollutant than a car and 40% less than a train. All this factors combined make the ATR less participating to the greenhouse effect than most of other means of transportation. Moreover, emissions of NOx (Nitrogen oxides) by new generation turboprops are at low altitude, well below the levels at which ozone depletion is a major concern.

Toulouse, France-based ATR, N°1 in turboprops in the 40 to 70 seat market segment, is a European joint venture between Finmeccanica/Alenia Aeronautica and EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company).
