EADS participates in the British "Bowman" multi-billion military communications programme

Munich, 20 July 2001

EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company will participate in the EUR 2.6 bn BOWMAN Communications programme of the British Army.

EADS welcomed the decision of the UK Ministry of Defence to contract the General Dynamics subsidiary CDC Systems UK Ltd, with which EADS Defence Systems and Electronics UK Ltd, a 100 per cent affiliate of EADS located in Milton Keynes, is teaming.

BOWMAN is a secure digital voice and data communication system based on Internet protocol. It will include land-based command & control systems, and will provide the infrastructure to support all digitization applications over the next 30 years. Initial operation capability will be provided within two years; all 18,000 army vehicles will be equipped and all 60,000 service personnel will be trained on BOWMAN by 2007. BOWMAN replaces a tactical communication system which is now 25 years old. EADS' participation comprises NATO interoperability issues and vehicle integration in Germany. Details of the distribution of workshares within the CDC team will be negotiated in the next couple of months. "Our participation in the BOWMAN programme demonstrates the skills of EADS in key sectors of information warfare and digitization. Capitalizing on the comprehensive proficiency of EADS in the defence electronics business, we are clearly expanding our activities in the UK market", stated Thomas Enders, President of EADS' Defence and Civil Systems Division and Member of the EADS Executive Board.

With revenues amounting to EUR 24.2 billion (2000) and 100,000 employees EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is the largest aerospace and defence company in Europe and number three worldwide. Its Systems & Defence Electronics business unit is a major supplier in the high-technology field of surveillance and reconnaissance, command & control systems and electronic warfare. It participates in important NATO digitization efforts.
