EADS presents first brigade-level command and control system at FÜREX 2001

Friedrichshafen, 22 March 2001

The rapid processing and analysis of vast amounts of data on the digitalised battlefield is the main feature of the "Reconnaissance and Control System" information network, which EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company presented to the highest-ranking German generals at FÜREX 2001 in Dresden. EADS has thus demonstrated for the first time a consistent command and control system from brigade to company level, which significantly improves the military planning and decision-making process.

The system has been developed by Dornier GmbH and LFK GmbH - both affiliates of EADS - in close contact with the Bundeswehr and acts as a demonstrator to reproduce the path from information acquisition by sensor through to information processing in the reconnaissance cell/ intelligence centre of a brigade unit. It opens up completely new possibilities through the integration of control and command components, which previously worked to a large extent in isolation. In this way, primary data from different sources - in Dresden it was an airborne platform and a reconnaissance patrol - are not only transmitted and evaluated practically in real time, but also linked with already existing information and processed into an extensive situation picture. This includes a high degree of automation as well as the utilisation of existing databases and the availability of efficient interrogation tools.

"Only when we make the most of the latest data processing and communication technologies will we succeed in turning the great volumes of information at the tactical and strategic levels into information superiority," explained Dr. Stefan Zoller, Head of the EADS Defence Electronics business unit and Chairman of the Dornier Executive Board. To achieve this, elements available in the future - which have been developed or are being developed under the responsibility or with the involvement of EADS, such as, for example, the battlefield command and control system GeFüSys and further command and control systems and special mission systems of the different branches of the services - will be integrated into a consistent systems network with the help of special across-the-board technology.

The "Reconnaissance and Control System " is now to be subjected to further intensive investigations within the framework of different national and international exercises.
