EADS CASA Espacio wins a contract with The European Centre of Nuclear Investigation for 6,4 M Euro

3,750 cryodipole and 872 support posts for the LHC cryomagnets will be supplied.

Madrid, 21  December  2000

The European Centre of Nuclear Investigation (CERN) in Switzerland, has selected EADS CASA Espacio as the supplier for the cryomagnet cryodipoles and support posts of the new European particle accelerator LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The amount of this contract is 6,4 M Euro, around 1,000 Million Pesetas.

After several years searching for the ideal solution, CERN has selected the EADS CASA proposal for these special supports. The proposed design employs the Resin Transfer Moulding Technology (RTM) of the glass fibre with which they are to be manufactured. These elements, as many others, can be considered as a spin-off product from a technology developed in the Space Industry. With this contract, the use of this technology is consolidated to be suitable for large series and not only for small ones as used so far for space elements.

This advanced particle accelerator will reach a longitude of around 27 km. and it will be installed on top of the special support posts, one every five metres approximately. They are designed to withstand not only the mechanical loads, but also extreme thermal loads that include a thermal gradient that varies from room temperature on the outside to a temperature of around 4 degrees Kelvin that is expected to be reached inside the super-conducting coils using super-fluid Helium. The success of the integrated RTM EADS CASA solution, among others presented by several companies, relies on the fact that it avoids the adhesive support joints which represent a great risk due to the thermal gradients.

EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company was formed on July 10, 2000 following the merger of Aerospatiale Matra of France, DaimlerChrysler Aerospace (Dasa) of Germany and the Spanish CASA. EADS is the third largest aerospace company in the world. It has approximately 87,000 employess.
