Lufthansa Orders Seven Additional Airbus A340-600s

Toulouse, 20  December  2004

Lufthansa has signed a contract with Airbus for a further seven A340-600 long-range aircraft. The German airline already operates 10 aircraft of the type together with 30 A340-300s and a growing fleet of A330-300s. Lufthansa also operates 72 Airbus A320 Family aircraft as well as 17 A300-600 and A310 aircraft. It also has an order for 15 A380s.

The seven additional A340-600s now ordered by Lufthansa are scheduled for delivery in 2006 and 2007 and will be powered by Rolls Royce Trent 500 engines. The aircraft will expand the airline’s capacity on long-range routes between Lufthansa’s hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, and destinations in Asia and the Americas, meeting the increasing demand for the next few years.

Noël Forgeard, Airbus President and CEO said: “We are pleased to see Lufthansa placing a repeat order for the Airbus A340-600, confirming the airline’s confidence in the aircraft type. Airbus is proud to ensure Lufthansa’s expected growth in long-range capacity.”

The addition of further Airbus A340-600s to Lufthansa’s fleet will increase the benefits for the carrier resulting from Airbus’ unique operational commonality advantages, including shorter training times for flight crew to transition from one Airbus aircraft to another, streamlined maintenance procedures and reduced spare parts holdings.

Also, the A340-600 will provide the best means of meeting the comfort and service expectations of travellers. For example, the Lufthansa A340-600 aircraft feature lower deck facilities including a dedicated galley complex, a crew rest area and passenger lavatories. This unique Airbus attribute provides added amenity for passengers and a better working environment for the cabin crew.

Airbus is an EADS joint company with BAE Systems.
